Shimmering Sandy Shores
Fringing gentle glittering turquoise waters along the southwest coast are world-renowned carpets of warm, sugar-white sand dotted with tall swaying palms and thatched huts. The lively two-mile-long stretch of Palm Beach is home to sprawling high-rise hotels, water sports centers, piers, shops, restaurants and beach bars. Just north is Hadicurari Beach (Fisherman’s Huts) with pebbly sand and shallow waters perfect for windsurfing. On the way to the California Lighthouse are Malmok Beach and Boca Catalina, bordered by million-dollar homes, as well as Arashi Beach, a heaven for snorkellers, with huts and a large parking area.
Driving south in the direction of Oranjestad, you will marvel at the magnificent blue waters of Eagle Beach, a long powdery expanse with plenty of parking and cabanas. At times, there may be a bit more wind and surf than at beaches to the north. Manchebo Beach, Aruba’s widest stretch of sand, is an oasis shaded by towering coconut palms. Punta Brabo may have rougher seas but the beaches are magnificent. Druif Beach, the long narrow area further south, is occupied by quiet low-rise properties. Past the town of San Nicolas in Seroe Colorado is Baby Beach, a placid, shallow half-moon lagoon. Conveniences include a parking area, some cabanas and huts, and a refreshment stand. The neighboring Rodgers Beach is dotted by fishing boats.
In contrast, the wind-whipped off-road beaches on the wild northeast coast have no amenities. Crashing waves and rough surf make swimming a risky and dangerous business. Intriguing natural bridges, imposing rock formations, steep limestone cliffs and barren desert terrain are the backdrop for black pebbled shores, secluded coves, pearly white sand dunes and other uniquely beautiful and private beach areas. No matter which beaches you choose, be sure you carry caps, cover-ups and plenty of water. Always have sunscreen on-hand and reapply often. Water shoes will protect your feet from coral, shells and pebbles. Use common sense on the sea; even in calm waters, you can drift far out before you know it.
